About The Big Rhetorical Podcast
What is the The Big Rhetorical Podcast?
The Big Rhetorical Podcast (TBR) was conceptualized in the spring of 2018 at Illinois State University. They envision this podcast as a digital platform for scholars of rhetoric and composition, as well as other disciplines, to talk about relevant scholarship within the field while engaging in a lively, academic dialogue. While Charles has taken over primary responsibility for TBR, Matt is still around and involved.
What do you envision as the trajectory of your podcast?
With TBR, we aim to add meaningful dialogue to an ongoing conversation concerning interesting scholarship and concepts related to rhetoric, composition, and English Studies. TBR seeks to function as a modernized, digital version of Kenneth Burke's parlor metaphor: guests come on the show, discuss their thoughts concerning a piece of scholarship, and, hopefully, advance the discussion. Hopefully, the podcast develops series like an "Emerging Scholars Series" to focus on graduate students and pre-tenure track faculty, as well as a place for conference organizers to promote upcoming events.
How often do episodes come out?
Charles is currently a graduate student in the middle of comprehensive exams, so free time is difficult to come by for him. During the semester, he will try to publish one podcast per month. During breaks in the academic year, he may work to present a bi-weekly podcast, or even weekly episodes. Be sure to check our Twitter page for updates and information regarding upcoming episodes.
How do you choose topics?
We are constantly consuming articles, books, new media, and other texts focused on the field of rhetoric and composition, so if a particular topic or specific subject piques our interest, we will likely build an episode around that idea. If you have stumbled across something you feel would spark an interesting discussion, or if you want to be a part of our Emerging Scholars Series or promote your upcoming conference, feel free to send us an email at [email protected].
Can I be a guest?
Yes. If you are involved in the field of rhetoric and composition, or a related field (remember, rhetoric and composition is an interdisciplinary field), or are a graduate student or an instructor at any level, from a Master's student to a tenured professor, you might make a great addition to the show. Feel free to reach out to us on Twitter @thebigrhet or via email at [email protected] with any ideas, requests, or suggestions for the show.
